.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to Ben at cal@eugeneweekly.com

Peter Rowan and Tony Rice come to The Shedd next week. Rowan is a soulful singer and a poignant songwriter, and Rice is a veteran of the David Grisman Quintet. Their newest album, and first full-fledged recording collaboration, You Were There For Me, came out Sept. 28, so you could almost call this a CD release party. Music fans should pack the house for this one. For more information see Thursday, Oct. 7 Calendar and Brett Campbell's music column this issue.

There's a meadow at 22nd and Madison, known as Madison Meadow, where for generations children have played in grass, lovers have rolled in wildflowers and musicians have sung beneath boughs of madrone, filbert, apple, pear and cherry. Now start the drum roll … the meadow — a rare bastion of open space in the Friendly neighborhood — was sold to a local developer who, according to the non-profit corporation Madison Meadow, plans to build between seven and 16 houses on the site. The non-profit seeks to raise $220,000 by December to buy back the meadow and preserve it as open space in perpetuity. A benefit concert and silent auction is at Cozmic Pizza. Save Madison Meadow! See Saturday Calendar.

Iron Jawed Angels, a HBO film about the fierce fight for women's right to vote, shows in 150 Columbia at the UO. This image depicts Alice Paul toasting the suffrage banner celebrating the passage of the 19th Amendment on Aug. 26, 1920. See Thursday, Oct. 7 Calendar.

First Friday Artwalk is a free guided tour of downtown art galleries and visual arts attractions. The first stop features the 2004 Mayor's Art Show at Jacobs Gallery. Next the walk moves to White Lotus Gallery for work by Gary Tepfer. Then it's What Does Family Look Like?, a photography exhibit at 25 W. 8th Ave. The final stop is at DIVA for the Salon des Refusés. Here's a portrait (left) showing in What Does Family Look Like? See Friday Calendar.

Now you see it, now you don't. The hand is quicker than the eye. Please lie on the table and ignore the scream of the descending buzz saw. Well, who knows the last time David Copperfield (left) used the ol' buzz saw trick, as he's better known for his, shall we say, larger-than-life illusions. You know, teleporting people, making enormous objects disappear, walking through the Great Wall of China, stuff like that. He's coming to the Hult Center to perform new spectacles, such as sleight of hand with a "lethal black African scorpion," squeezing himself into a shape that could "fit into a Prada shoebox," and an interactive event where he helps audience members predict lottery numbers. See Sunday Calendar.
