.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to Ben at cal@eugeneweekly.com

Etta James has flourished from the age of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late '60s heyday and right up to today (her 1994 Mystery Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to one of her idols, Billie Holiday). James' voice has deepened over the years, coarsened more than a little, but still conveys remarkable passion and pain. She belts it out at the McDonald Theatre. See Saturday Calendar.

The 2004 Dia de los Muertos exhibit shows at Maude Kerns Art Center. Works celebrate this Latin American Day of the Dead, focusing on the vibrancy of passing life. The show runs through Nov. 12. See Art in the Galleries and arts story this week.

Don't miss the annual fall Mushroom Festival and plant sale at Mt. Pisgah Arboretum. Presented by the Cascade Mycological Society and LCC, this event includes one of the largest mushroom displays on the West Coast, a huge plant sale, a scarecrow contest, children's activities, hayrides, craft vendors, food, fresh cider, music, wine tasting and more! See Sunday Calendar.

Halloween, baby! Eugene's got a plethora of spooky activities this year, from music to corn-mazes to haunted houses. On Oct. 31, check out the Michael Franti and Spearhead concert at the McDonald Theatre; the Scream in the Dark haunted house at the Lane County Fairgrounds; a scarecrow contest at Mt. Pisgah; a House of Spiders children's event at the Whiteaker Police Substation and Centro Latino Americano building; and Halloween shows at clubs around town. See Calendar for more bone-chilling events.

Hold on to your beer mugs, 'cause Built to Spill is back at the WOW Hall. Doug Martsch leads this alternative rock trio with his haunting, well-wielded vocals and honed stage sense. The WOW Hall show is the band's only Oregon appearance on their current mini-tour, which starts in Eugene and ends in Los Angeles. Built last played the WOW in 2001, and Martsch came through a couple of times more recently promoting his solo album, Now You Know. See Thursday, Nov. 4 Calendar.
