The Eugene Ballet Company is staging choreographer Dennis Spaight's Scheherazade, the result of Spaight's dream of creating a ballet that would both match Rimsky-Korsakov's lush score and resonate with today's audience. Striking costumes, a lavish set, and a non-traditional departure in Scheherazade's tale combine with Spaight's seamless choreography for a striking piece with an underlying feminist theme. The EBC presents Scheherazade, along with Artistic Director Toni Pimble's Two's Company and the premiere of her new work, Divertimento, this weekend. See story, page 34, and Saturday Calendar.

For 40 years, Toots and the Maytals have recorded with renowned producers, turned out massive hits, and put their stamp on pieces of history — Toots Live, released less than 24 hours after a 1980 show at London's Hammersmith Palais, was the fastest live album ever released. (My, how things have changed!) Last year, Toots and the Maytals released True Love, which found the band revisiting some of their classic works with a whole host of guest musicians, from the unsurprising to the utterly unexpected. Along with dancehall hitmaker Shaggy and ska legends the Skatalites, Toots recruited legends from Willie Nelson to Keith Richards to Eric Clapton. A few young upstarts make appearances as well, including hipster heartbreaker Ryan Adams and still up-and-coming songstress Rachel Yamagata. Toots and the Maytals, with the Animal Liberation Orchestra in tow, stop in Eugene at the McDonald Theatre. See Tuesday Calendar.

The Eugene Symphony has quite a night planned with a trio of pieces by Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Beethoven. The woodwinds take center stage with Stravinsky's Symphonies of the Wind Instruments, and Shostakovich calls up images of the Russian Revolution with his Symphony No. 12, "The Year 1917." But it's Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, featuring pianist Adam Nieman (pictured left), that takes top billing. Nieman, a 26-year-old Juilliard graduate, has performed at Carnegie Hall as well as with the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, San Francisco, Saint Louis and the National Symphony Orchestra. He arrives in Eugene preceded by a reputation for compelling and colorful performances. There is a free preview of the concert at noon Wednesday, and Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero gives a pre-show talk 45 minutes before the show. See story, page 27, and Thursday, April 21 Calendar.
