Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 08.17.06

.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

Yargh! Glut of cool things happening! We want to get it all in before it comes to an end. Of course, there's the Lane County Fair (we live close enough to hear cows bellowing in the morning: Milk me, slugabeds!). But you know the summer's winding down when the city-sponsored outdoor things finish up. No, it's not the last week of Friday movies in the park (this week: Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit! Free! With popcorn though without Wensleydale cheese, alas … ), but it's your last chance to try city-sponsored Yoga in Monroe Park, Poi spinning in Sladden Park (pictured), or the Community Climb at the Columns in Skinner Butte Park. And of course, you have two more weekends to get to Free Shakespeare in the Park's The Taming of the Shrew. For non-Eugene-sponsored cool things to do in the hot outdoors, there are the super-butt-building, calf-muscle-intensive GEARs rides or the Family Marsh Walk on Wednesday. If you're more inclined to the filmic indoors, check out DIVA's Viewer's Choice on Saturday or Video Slam on Sunday. OK, clearly, the problem is that there's so much to do, we don't know what to tell you. Just, well, just … do something! See Calendar.

Now here's a festival with a genuine heart. On Saturday, head to the Hope Fest at the Broadway Plaza in downtown for eight hours of live music, including Lizzie Cable (pictured), games, food, raffles and silent auctions. Help support the Teddy Bear/Backpack Drive by bringing a new teddy bear or backpack stuffed with school supplies. These items will be distributed to drug endangered children, including foster children in Lane County. Proceeds from the Hope Fest go to a good cause, so if that's not good enough reason to skip your planned Starbucks loitering, hop on a bike, throw a teddy bear in your backpack and enjoy a festival downtown, we don't know what is. See Saturday Calendar.

ReIf you're the kind of person who commonly uses "garlicky" when describing the perfect red wine, then the Lorane Valley Wine & Garlic Festival at King Estate's new MarketPlace is a sure bet this weekend. Live music, food vendors, artisans, crafters, wine and garlic. All of it local, all of it fresh (and all of it waiting to stain your teeth and breath with a flourish of tastebud-tingling zest). Saturday afternoon concludes with guitar virtuoso Ken Emerson sharing the stage with Jerry Zybach & The Stagehogs, while Sunday afternoon introduces a salad ingredient of a non-garlicky flavor, as homegrown favorites The Sugar Beets jam on the guitar, mandolin, and violin for a perfect cap to wine-and-garlic bliss. See Calendar.
