History
comes alive this weekend at the Dorris Ranch Living
History Festival as hundreds of Civil War re-enactors
play Union and Confederate soldiers (pictured), medics
and family members in a harrowing historical theater
experience of war and its bloody aftermath. For those
not so enthusiastic about cannon blasts and buckshot,
historical interpreters will also represent early
explorers, trappers, pioneers, miners, farmers and
loggers in a more intimate setting. Also be sure to
check out Crafter's Alley, take a wagon ride or barter
with the best at Eugene Skinner's Trading Post. Just
remember there's no parking at Dorris Ranch, so catch
the shuttle at 5th and A streets in Springfield. See
Saturday Calendar.
We're
searching our archives and reconstructing a conglomerated
map of all past art walks in Eugene. Once complete,
we will discover the unique Art Heart Hub that
makes all this art-making and art-displaying tick
in this fair city (muhahaha!). But, while this
Eugene-Home Project will take many years of careful
study (and loopy laughter), you can get a rough
preview of our results at this week's First
Friday ARTWalk. The always-popular walk will
be front-loaded with a start at the DIVA Gallery,
where six exhibits are explored by tour leader
Darrell Kau, the program coordinator for the UO
Cultural Forum. Expect a variety of moods and
settings from artists like Blue Mitchell, whose
"Mythos" photography exhibit tries to "capture
a world that has been subverted by our intellect,"
according to the press release. Next stop lands
you thick in the oil paintings of Croatian-born
Ivan Tomicic at La Follette Gallery. Stop #3 features
etchings (pictured left) by Tanaka Ryohei at the
White Lotus Gallery. The fourth stop features
Jill Atkin's oil and pastel work at Opus6ix, where
she captures nature in explosive color. Last stop
this week is across the street at Jacobs Gallery,
where Dennis Gould's surreal abstract paintings
will tantalize and tweak your sense of reality.
See Friday Calendar.
Let's
be honest, we've had many summers of love, but
it's been 40 years since the first official Summer
of Love, in 1967, when the Monterey Pop Festival
and the Human Be In Concert in the Bay Area set
the precedent for future outdoor rock concerts,
ultimately culminating in 1969's Woodstock (and,
more currently, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo and Austin
City Limits music festivals, among others). Recreating
some this past glory is the focus of this year's
Roots and Rhythms Festival at Iris Hill
Winery. A handful of the bands that played in
'67 are on a national tour and will make this
fest their only Oregon stop. Ready your tie-dyed
self for the likes of Jefferson Starship (pictured
right), Quicksilver Messenger Service, Big Brother
& Holding Co., David Laflamme and the Grateful
Dead's Tom Constanten. Erik Himmelsbach, a producer
for VH1, went so far as to dub this the "grooviest
convergence of psychedelic rock since Monterey
Pop 40 years ago. Accept no substitute!" We'll
take his word. See Saturday Calendar.
