While
some think beer makes the perfect cure-all for the
blues; others believe the best pairing with a night
of the blues is a good Syrah or Zinfandel (but no
true wine connoisseur will ever admit it). If you
secretively fall into the latter category, head on
over to the aptly-named Secret House Vineyards for
the 15th annual Wine & Blues Festival.
Featuring the Northwest Harmonica Championship Finals
(watch 'em reach for the stars!) and special performances
from Linda Hornbuckle (right), Henry Cooper (left)
and other local blues greats, you would be amiss to
miss this benefit event for the Musician's Emergency
Medical Association. See Saturday Calendar.
We
wonder if the Bicycle Poker Cruise was
hatched after a bored poker-playing cyclist contemplated
the back of his Bicycle brand playing cards and
then considered combining the two in a benefit
event for Lance "cyclist-cum-erstwhile-marathoner"
Armstrong's LiveStrong Foundation. We'll never
really know how it got started (that would
require a Congressional subpoena, and even those
don't work anymore), but here's how it works:
Donate $15 to participate, join the group ride
around town to various checkpoints, collect a
card at each stop and return to Diablo's Downtown
Lounge to play your hand. The grand prize is a
"Fat Tire" Cruiser Bike, as if you needed another
bike in your six-bike garage. See Sunday Calendar.
Since
1999, the Huerto de la Familia (Family Garden)
nonprofit organization has been providing low-income
Latino families with gardening education and space
in local community gardens to grow their own vegetables.
All those fresh veggies make great food (and especially
great salsa), so why not sample some of it at
this weekend's Garden Fiesta, a benefit
for Huerto de la Familia and FOOD for Lane County,
at the Churchill Community Garden? There'll be
art activities, silent auctions, garden tours
and even a salsa-making contest (yum!) in addition
to the appetizing food available for purchase.
See Saturday Calendar.
