Deadline
for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday,
a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with
event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com
Like
many of the best artists and tabloid celebrities,
stand-up comedian Mike Birbiglia likes to keep
his secrets out in the open. He's best known for his
nationally syndicated diary readings on The Bob
and Tom Show, in which he chronicles the sheer
horror and bracing hilarity of life on tour …
an endless tour, it seems. Wikipedia lists his type
of comedy as "deadpan, sarcasm," and that just about
sums up Birbiglia's awkward dude style of comic delivery
that touches on topics ranging from Christian rock
to Busta Rhymes to George "W is for Whiffleball Captain"
Bush. Check him out at the McDonald Theatre for MORE
SECRETS REVEALED! See Saturday Calendar.
We
wonder about the voter who wrote in "Restrooms
in Parkade" in our "Best Stop on the First Friday
Art Walk" category because … uh, don't these
galleries and shops have restrooms? Well, yes
and no. Many are employee-only and/or don't consider
art walkers "customers." So maybe what we really
need downtown is one of those European-style self-cleaning
restrooms. Just something to chew on while you
take a stroll through our beautiful, "blighted"
gallery district on the First Friday ARTWalk.
Begin the tour at Goldworks Jewelry Art Studio,
where Erin Wendland-Murphy displays her "seductive"
pieces of jewelry, before jogging a few steps
over to Passionflower Design for Michael Michaud's
equally extravagant metal jewelry. The third stop
parks at LaFollette Gallery for a look at Jani
Hoberg's etchings and monoprints, partly inspired
from a trip to Europe she took last year. Still
with us? Good, because the fourth stop hobnobs
at the "Best Stop on the First Friday Art Walk,"
the diverse DIVA galleries (including photography
by Jennifer Salzman, pictured), while New Zone
Art Collective (out with the Salon, in with the
Susan Klein!) rounds out the fifth and final stop.
Whew! See Friday Calendar.
Joshua
Bell (with the Eugene Symphony)
may be this week's heavyweight classical
contender for your hard-earned (or
smartly invested) greenbacks, but
don't miss out on the Oregon
Mozart Players' "All Amadeus"
performance, a perennial favorite
that focuses on the Austrian boy
genius' oeuvre. The program kicks
off with the "La Finta Giardiniera"
overture, a rollicking piece written
when Mozart was only 18 years old.
Paganini Competition winner and
Beijing-born violinist Bin Huang
(pictured right) guests on Mozart's
"Turkish" concerto for the second
act while the Players conclude with
the "powerful and dramatic" 40th
Symphony. Catch the Saturday night
show at the Hult Center or the Sunday
matinee at Jaqua Concert Hall. See
Calendar.
