| Ongoing Calendar | Galleries

Deadline
for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday,
a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with
event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com
| Lloyd
Kaufman (pictured) and his media company, Troma
Entertainment, aim for lowness on all levels: low-budget,
low humor, low expectations and low blows. Credited
with coming up with some of the most fucking hilarious
film titles ever (our favorite is Surf Nazis Must
Die), Yale grad (and G.W. Bush classmate) Kaufman
and his ragtag team of B-movie filmmakers have been
skewering the so-called "slapstick gore" genre since
the '70s. Surely local director Henry Weintraub (of
Backyard Barbecue Horror and MindSlime
fame) is a direct descendant of Kaufman's cult. Kaufman
(not related to Charlie) will be in Eugene to host
a "Make Your Own Damn Movie" presentation on
low-budget filmmaking at DIVA on Saturday and also
to introduce his latest flick, Poultrygeist:
Night of the Chicken Dead, screening at Bijou
Cinemas Friday through Sunday. Kaufman will supposedly
be present at the Saturday night and Sunday matinee
showings. See Calendar.

| We're
not sure what art is showing at Passionflower,
the first stop on this month's First Friday
ARTWalk, led by local artist Judy Allison,
but there will be art in the air as Sandy and
Peter Jensen read love poems, some excerpted from
Sandy's book, I Saw Us in a Painting, and
some from other cultures and times. Bring your
own love poem and bask in the filthy glory of
lovey-dovey-ness. Next, the ARTWalk rests its
haunches at DIVA, where beautiful renderings and
scale models of homes, community centers and churches
designed by Robert Harvey Oshatz and other architects
show in four of DIVA's five galleries;
the members' gallery debuts Deborah Heal's landscape
paintings (pictured). Mixed media pop surrealism
paintings by Stephen Beebe greets you at Stop
#3, the Fenario Gallery, before bouncing
down the street to the Jacobs Gallery exhibit,
"Reliquary: The Everyday Sacred," featuring paintings
and mixed media by Claire Flint, Sarah Grew and
Ken Herrin. The fifth stop of the night lands
at Blue Moon Jewelry Designs at 6th and
Olive, where Margarita O'Brien displays "playful
… beautifully detailed" miniature paintings.
Elsewhere on the walk, check out Robert Adams'
mixed media at New Odyssey (where Modcam
plays a show to promote his debut CD); New
Zone Gallery has an interesting group show
called "Three Views of Digital Diversity." See
Friday Calendar.

| Truthfully
we'd rather be in Rio de Janiero,
or Venice, or heck, even Slovenia
for Mardi Gras on Tuesday.
WORLDWIDE PARTAY! But alas, we are
in the less than festive Eugene,
with a smattering of bars offering
Mardi Gras-themed nights (Yeah,
right, like we're going to
get smashed on a Tuesday!). But
the good news is that this fucking
holiday brings in some fucking good
old-time bluegrass bands. In chronological
order, we have an "Old Timey
Hootenanny" on Friday, featuring
our favorite local bluegreaser bands
The Conjugal Visitors and
Bad Mitten Orchestre in a benefit
show at Cozmic Pizza. Saturday brings
the Louisiana roots and old-timey
Cajun Shrimp sounds of Bark Shanty
to a masquerade ball at Cottage
Grove's Axe & Fiddle. Next Thursday,
Feb. 7, the A&F also hosts a
smörgåsbord of Portlandia
moonshiner bands like Clampitt,
Gaddis & Buck, Whiskey
Puppy, Chickweed (pictured)
and Mighty Ghosts of Heaven.
When's the last time you spent a
night at the C. Grove? We hear it's
happening 'n' stuff. See Calendar.
