We
sort of remember Bone Thugs-N-Harmony selling
a ton of albums back in the heyday of the early '90s,
but didn't know they were still, you know, out
theremaking music. Luckily Bone Thugs'
press release is a handy year-by-year timeline. Let's
see, uh, in 1991 they form under the name Bone Enterpri$e;
in 1994 they release Creepin On Ah Come Up
which goes platinum four times; in 1995 they release
E.1999 Eternal, it makes even more money, and
then Eazy-E dies of AIDS; in 2000 they release BTNHRessurrection
which "stops all rumors that they are broken up";
in 2006 they "ink a monumental deal with Interscope
Records." No word on why it was monumental, considering
their multi-platinum status, but we wish them good
health and warm hugs as they play to the often ruthless
thugs at the McDonald Theatre. See Sunday Calendar.
Say
you are a Volkwagen driver (or TV commercial freaknik),
and you happened to be in Australia last year:
You may have heard Canadian folk songstress Basia
Bulat's "Little Waltz" for the German automaker's
commercial for the 2008 Eos. (OK! Fine! We're
putting it on our blog. What! EW? A blog?
Ew! Yeah, really.) Anyway, so aside from promoting
vehicular make-out sessions and long drives near
the Gold Coast, Bulat has a freshly pressed new
album to promote, Oh, My Darling. It came
out earlier this month on Rough Trade. (For trivia's
sake, Oh, My Darling was recorded in the
same attic studio as Arcade Fire's Funeral.)
Bulat's music? Well, let's say it's fit for lovely
commercial montages, lending itself to soft, breathy
emotional responses. But Bulat also has a healthy
roster of get-up-and-dance numbers, such as "In
the Night," "Snakes and Ladders" and the hand-clappy
"I Was a Daughter." See Friday Calendar.
.
Not
to be confused with the Moscow State
Circus (now a U.K. production),
the distinctly Russian Moscow
Circus promises to delight with
folk musicians, dancers, human puppets,
daredevil stunts and lush costumes
Sunday evening at the Hult Center.
Thank none other than V.I. Lenin
for Russia's renowned circus acts,
a cultural export since the 1950s.
After the Bolshevic Revolution of
1917, the circus was recognized
by the Communist Party as an "egalitarian
… form of entertainment, enjoyed
by all, regardless of race, language,
age, education or class," says a
press release. Ah, so no wonder
commies and carnies go hand in hand!
Sure, Sunday's presentation can't
quite compare to the Big Top experience,
but it's definitely a glimpse into
the wild and crazy antics seen at
a "Russian Folk Fair," the theme
for the evening. See Sunday Calendar.
