Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 12.04.08

.This Week's Calendar | Ongoing Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

If the tagline “Holidaze in Hicksville” scares you off, stay calm: Saturday’s concert in Corvallis with Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks is not the musical equivalent of Snow White and Seven Rednecks. Sure, legendary singer-songwriter Hicks (pictured) combines elements of cowboy folk, country-swing, bluegrass, pop and gypsy music, but that’s about as countrified as it’s going to get at Crescent Valley High School as the Hot Licks present a unique evening of classy entertainment. Best known for his songs “I Scare Myself” and “Canned Music,” Hicks has been performing strong since the late ‘60s. His “Holidaze” show promises some surprises and a few very special guests. 8 pm Saturday, Dec. 6, Crescent Valley High School. www.corvallistheaters.com $26.50 adv., $28 door.

Never-before-seen TV commercials for obscure toys? Instructional videos on how to handle sexual harassment at the workplace, made at the height of said plague, the early ‘90s? Long-forgotten home videos featuring daredevil stunts? If this all sounds familiar, that’s because we’ve seen it all before on YouTube. Or so we think. Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher have been co-curating the Found Footage Festival for the past four years and somehow always manage to come up with gems that no search on YouTube will reveal. In addition to the collection of oddities (mostly made by unselfconscious filmmakers from the ‘80s and ‘90s), Pickett and Prueher provide colorful commentary and stand-up routines (both are veterans of The Onion and The Colbert Report). 7:30 pm Sunday, Dec. 7, Bijou Cinemas. $10.

It’s the last First Friday ArtWalk of the year and it’s going to be a big one. Not only will the sheer spectacle of hordes flooding the downtown core fend off the rain clouds (10 percent chance of rain Friday) but the art walk coincides with the fifth annual Downtown Holiday Party, where more than 20 businesses (other than the galleries) will remain open for your browsing and shopping needs ‘til late. Kick the evening off right at New Zone Gallery, where Riley Grannan of the Eugene Ballet Company hosts the guided tour and discusses the lustrous silk paintings of Merideth Ferrell. Stop #2 visits mixed media prints (detail pictured) by Jody Dunphy at La Follette Gallery before checking out Mark Lammi’s glass art installations at Fenario Gallery. Stop #4 has “Manic and Hyper-Realism” work by Jeremy Covert and Shawn Mediaclast at the Museum of Unfine Art. The final stop — metalworks by Tracey Bell, Margarita O’Brien and Renee Ford at Blue Moon Jewelry — is conveniently located a few blocks from the Fifth Street Public Market, allowing you to continue your holiday in the lap of luxury. 5:30 pm Friday, Dec. 5, begins at New Zone Gallery, 164 W. Broadway. Free.
