Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 1.8.09

.This Week's Calendar | Ongoing Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

As it has in the past, this year’s installation of DIVA’s OpenLens Festival celebrates the short film and video output of non-Portland-based Oregon filmmakers and for good measure, perhaps crowns one Portland filmmaker as host. This year that honor goes to animator Joanna Priestly (pictured), whose work has been heralded with retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art (Ground Central of The Artz), Center for Contemporary Art (apparently the real center is in Poland) and American Cinematheque (located in Los Angeles, not Paris). On Friday, see Priestly’s stuff at DIVA in a kickoff event for the festival. Seminars will be taught on Saturday morning followed by screenings of the Youth Visions Teen Video Challenge and the Southwest Oregon Short Film & Video Competition (featuring work by Steven Weeks, Henry Weintraub, Brian Walker and Ziyoung You). Encore screenings take place on Sunday, followed by an awards party later in the evening. Except the seminars, admission to most events is $5 or free. See Calendar for full listings.

If you haven’t seen Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job! then you probably don’t have cable TV. (Pssst, we don’t, either.) But that doesn’t stop us from sucking up many of the Adult Swim’s best comedy duo's hilarious clips on YouTube. Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim met at a “serious film school” on the East Coast and realized they were being duped into making the next wave of French New Wave film. What they really wanted to do was make mockumentaries in a style unheard of since Monty Python and Spinal Tap, but with a consumerist culture edge. “A lot of our stuff is like, ‘We’re fucked, so let’s dance,’” Heidecker told The Onion A/V Club recently. “We don’t hand jokes to anybody on silver platters, and we don’t make it easy for someone to necessarily like it or get it.” But those who have “got it” are legion: Tim and Eric’s “mockumercials” for Absolut vodka have been viewed by over a gazillion desk monkeys the world over. (We hear they’re even big in Paraguay.) After Wednesday’s mix of sketch comedy and theater of the absurd at McDonald Theatre, stick around for a chance to meet Tim and Eric without all their cakey makeup. 9 pm Wednesday, Jan. 14, at McDonald Theatre. $22.

Until the U.S. government wakes up to the insane amount of sense a single-payer healthcare system makes, Americans will continue to hold benefit events like the one that’s happening on Friday at Cozmic Pizza. Mark Zolun (pictured), owner and chef at the currently-being-relocated restaurant Iraila, was diagnosed with bladder cancer last year and is undergoing effective chemo treatments without health insurance. Needless to say, the bills are astronomical. Friday’s event, “When Life Gives you Cancer, Make a Variety Show and Flea Market!” will feature entertainment by The Swinging Marmalukeys, Americanistan, Dirty Wink and Luminessah belly dancers. Organizers ask that attendees bring an “irresistible item (art, junk or memento) to donate to the onsite flea market,” and take home a few treasures themselves. If you can’t make it but still want to help Zolun out, tax-deductible donations can be made at a fund set up at Washington Mutual bank. 7 pm Friday, Jan. 9, at Cozmic Pizza. $10.
