.This Week's Calendar | Ongoing Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

Never has donating a few items from your cupboard yielded such a smashing good time. Bring just three cans of food for FOOD for Lane County to gain entry to the Winter Fashion Show at Jo Federigo’s Friday. With a showcase of apparel sourced from Buffalo Exchange (pictured), Melange, Shag Boutique, Boardsports, Freudian Slip and other area shops and their employees, it’s the perfect primer to what’s hot to trot in this cold, clammy climate of ours. (And unlike fashions seen on Project Runway, these would actually fly in our neck of the woods.) Join MCs Marv Ellis and Casey Mitchell for an evening of style, runway antics and music mixed by DJ Rain. A silent auction for gift certificates to most of the stores mentioned above rounds out the evening. 9 pm Friday, Jan. 16, at Jo Federigo’s. Three cans of food admission.

MLK Jr. Day! 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade! Obama lives the dream! Somebody should make this week a national holiday celebrating progressive policy. See Calendar.

Despite our constant jam practices in Mark’s basement, our hallucinogenic album covers, our use of the wildly popular didjeridu, our experiments with various over-the-counter naturopathic edibles and a constant presence at summer festivals … our band still can’t be as big as O.A.R.. We keep trying — gawd knows we keep trying! But there’s just something about five dudes with guitars, drums and a saxophone that just blows the minds of American dudes … who also play guitar and drums and sax. Maybe we need to push our band to the extreme center of normality for success like that. Mark: You’re out of the band! No cellos! Amy: You, too! You’re our best guitarist, but I’m sorry, no women allowed. Ah yes, just wait, Fox News Channel … our band will be playing your next New Year’s broadcast. O.A.R. and Eric Hutchison play at 8 pm Friday, Jan. 16, at McDonald Theater. $22.50 adv., $25 door.

Drums and the human voice go hand-in-hand with African dance, a delicate play of beats, nonverbal communication and energetic movements. The UO’s resident African dance ensemble, Dance Africa, will present a concert featuring sister-brother African dance instructors Mondjou and Salif Koné. The Koné siblings belong to a well-known Griot family in West Africa, a group renowned for its “ability to record events carefully and accurately, using dance, music and song,” according to a press release. Watch Dance Africa’s concert and see what messages you can decipher. 8 pm Thursday, Jan. 22, through Jan. 24; 2 pm Jan. 24, at Dougherty Dance Theater, UO. $10, $5 stu., sr.
