Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 2.4.10

.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

A public showing and sale of artwork by longtime EW art and production director Kevin Dougherty, who died Oct. 21 at the age of 49, will be held Feb. 9-11 at New Zone Gallery, and there will be a special reception honoring Kevin’s birthday 7-9pm Wednesday, Feb. 10, with all proceeds going to benefit Dougherty’s kids.

Hailing from the Midwest music mecca of Minneapolis, hip-hop duo Eyedea & Abilities — aka Blaze Battle champ Michael Larsen and DJ Abilities — lay down the same kind of angry, 8-mile skids that made Eminem the toast of wannabe white trash everywhere. At their most furious, A&E can outdo even Marshall Mathers in terms of sheer aggression, mashing hopped-up beats, staccato lyrics and machine-crunch music into the buzz of a chainsaw ripping through the hood of a junked Impala. After a hiatus of several years, the boys are touring a new album, By the Throat, which combines a Beasties-like taste for punk power chords with a scratchy, filthy feel for the vintage groove of early NWA. “Junk,” the first single, sounds like “Sabotage” remixed for the meth-and-meringue set. This is vigorous, nasty shit. Eyedea & Abilities jam with Dosh, the ILLusionists and Undermind 7:30pm Monday, Feb. 8, at WOW Hall; $10 adv., $12 door.

On loan from a private collection, Pablo Picasso’s 1969 painting “Buste D’Homme” is on display this very moment at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. What more is there so say but: Go and behold, pronto! Don’t delay! But please, for the love of all that’s sacred, don’t fall into the thing like that woman last month at MOMA who tripped and tore a chunk of Picasso’s “The Actor.” What a dumb ass!
