Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 6.3.10

.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

That very cool, patched together Jurassic-Venus-flytrap looking sculpture above — a found-item assemblage by artist Bowen Garner, called “Dragon Lamp” — is part of the wonderful “Bits and Pieces” exhibit at MECCA, just one of the many stops at this month’s First Friday Art Walk, which gets underway around 5:30pm June 4 and runs to somewheres near 9pm. Other splendiferous sights you’ll see along the way include a hair stylist exhibit, “HairStory,” at Studio Mantra, as well as the grand opening of the Oregon Crafted studio and an exhibit of work by students from the UO’s Department of Architecture and Product Design program at Modern on 5th. For details, info and a guide, visit www.lanearts.org, and hie thee outa the house! Rumor has it winter is finally… over?

Did you miss YACHT two weeks ago at KWVA’s birthday bash? No worries; they’re back in the valley this weekend at OSU’s Flat Tail Festival. YACHT shares the stage with a spiffy lineup that includes Minus the Bear, whose new album is due out in August; Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, a former SPIN “hot new band” who, like MtB, hail from Seattle; Portland’s I Will Be King; and the much-hyped Neon Indian (pictured), the dreamy, lushly retro solo project of 21-year-old Alan Palomo. Pitchfork nailed it when they called Neon Indian “effervescent, goofy, and achingly nostalgic. Kind of like MGMT on a ramen budget — and with less face paint.” Get over your I-missed-Sasquatch regret at OSU’s Memorial Union Quad at 5:45 pm Saturday, June 5. The show kicks off with the winner of the previous night’s Battle of the Bands — and it’s all free.
