Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 6.24.10

.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

Troy Andrews, better known by the moniker Trombone Shorty, is a New Orleans musician who excels at both trumpet and trombone, though it’s not all that tough to guess his jazzy forte. He grew up in the Treme neighborhood, currently the titular locale for one of HBO’s new series, which Shorty would fit into nicely. As a ’boner who has jammed with all the biggest names — from Lenny Kravitz and Aerosmith to Charles Neville and U2 — this man has the chops and the experience to joyously rip off the top of your skull and put it in on backwards. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue play 7:30pm Thursday, July 1, at The Shedd; $24/$29.

Picture this: A bar in the early years of jazz, notes floating softly from the stage and smoke lingering in a thick haze. Okay, now throw that bar into a time machine, sex it all up a bit, and set the date for 2010 — you’ve just discovered Voodoun Moi, a new outfit that includes Eric Valentine and Genevieve Bellemare, former members of “Next Best Thing, Eugene”-winning band John Giovanni. With a delicious concoction of nu-jazz, funk and folk, this groovy quartet combines smoky, better-than-burlesque vocals with sly grooves, bass lines and rhythms right out of jazz music’s sassiest eras. Damn hard to capture their sound in words, so best to see them live and let the music speak for itself. Voodoun Moi plays with Phoebe Blume at 8pm Friday, June 25, at WOW Hall; $10 adv., $12 door.
