Eugene Weekly : Calendar : 9.22.11

.This Week's Calendar | Galleries | Music @ the Clubs

Deadline for Calendar and Art in the Galleries submissions are noon on Thursday, a week before the issue that covers your event. Send an e-mail with event, date, time, location and cost to attend to cal@eugeneweekly.com

Objectionable things belong in the library, especially salacious, controversial reads like Beverley Cleary’s Ramona the Brave, which was challenged for removal at the Salem-Keizer School District in 1993. The Library Association and the Lane County chapter of the ACLU celebrate challenged books and free speech with Banned Books Week, which kicks off with a banned books read-out noon-2pm Saturday at the downtown library. Books that have been challenged in Lane County include Clan of the Cave Bear (Jean Auel), Wizard’s First Rule (Terry Goodkind) and The Giver (Lois Lowry). For more information on Banned Books Week, check out www.aclu-or.org/bannedbooks
