Arts Hound

A new fashion duo is taking the reins of the Whiteaker Block Party Fashion Show this year and they’ve got some tricks up their secondhand sleeves. Briah Izreal and Oblio Stroyman, new owners of the Whit boutique Redoux Parlour, will host a resale runway show with the help of St. Vinnie’s Creative Projects Manager Mitra Chester at 9 pm Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Cornerstone Glass Stage (1068 W. 2nd Ave.) preceded by a performance from the darkwave ensemble Black Magdalene. “We’re not working with designers this year,” Izreal says. “We’re doing resale. We’re doing a four-time-period theme — four vignettes — starting with the 1920s Prohibition era.”  Models will also sport ensembles from the disco age, the ’80s and “today into the future.” “They’ll come out and strut their stuff,” Izreal says of the models, “and then take their place in a still vignette.”

First Friday ArtWalk and Create! Eugene — the second annual month-long celebration of the arts hosted by the Arts & Business Alliance of Eugene — kick off on Aug. 1. On the FFAW guided tour, hosted by Travel Lane County’s Director of Community Relations Lisa Lawton, don’t miss the Kesey Square stop for demos by the Plein Air Painters of Lane County, live music by local band Yama Yama and an interactive project presented by the Wordcrafters. Next up on the tour is the Sponsors’ show The Bigger Picture 5:30 to 8 pm at the Octagon (92. E. Broadway), featuring the work of street artist Tyler Haworth known for his spray-paint art. Farther east on Broadway, Out On A Limb presents guest artist Barry LaVoie, whose steampunk-esque oil wood panel paintings are reminiscent of pop surrealist Mark Ryden. The Gallery at the Watershed (321 Mill St. Suite 6) is also hosting a knockout show highlighting veteran artist Christy Wyckoff, whose work has also been exhibited at the Portland Art Museum and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art; see his dazzling and hyper-detailed landscape studies in oils, monotypes, kiln-formed glass, woven lithographed paper, woodcuts and more.

EW is excited to announce that we received upward of 30 fantastic, colorful, funny and kooky submissions from local artists for our inaugural ArtsHound: Unleashed on Broadway contest. We are in the process of choosing the work of five artists to display on EW distribution boxes for the month of September, and artists will present their box during that month’s First Friday ArtWalk. Look for an announcement of the ArtsHound winners mid-August.
