Tasty Tacos and Tremendous Tamales

Stay for seconds at cozy Mama Mayra's Kitchen

Walking up to Mama Mayra’s, the first thing you might notice is that it seems to be attached to someone’s home. The next thing you see might be a full-sized metal suit of armor holding a sword and wearing an apron. This homey feeling on the outside matches the interior, which is painted bright yellow, green and orange and features eclectic paintings and many potted plants.

Mama Mayra’s feels like your favorite aunt’s house. The expansive menu includes items like “Fish Tacos (Really Good!)” and unique specials like champiqueso, a dish with steak, mushrooms and cheese layered on traditional tortillas, and the aventurero, an amalgamation of many different ingredients on top of tortillas.

I tried the tamale plate, and they were delicious. The meat inside was slow-cooked to perfection with a delicate balance of spices lending the dish flavor without being too hot. It was served with classic rice and beans and the tamales were topped with cilantro, sour cream, salsa and lettuce.

I left full and satisfied, sad to finish the last bite of my meal. Mama Mayra’s leaves you wanting to enjoy it much longer, and stay in that comfortable space a while. — Kelly Kenoyer
