We hear that Laxton’s Big & Tall shop is closing its doors forever at 4 pm Saturday, June 16, after 57 years of business. Laxton’s is selling its remaining goods at an additional 50 percent off the lowest sale price. Founder Walt Laxton died in 1985 and his wife, Lily, took over the store and still works there at age 86. Their son Kent Laxton has worked at the store since 1969. College towns are real estate investors’ “best kept secret,” according to the CNN Money website June 6. The story says colleges and universities add stability to the rental market regardless of what the economy is doing, and “Even developers who have cut back on other housing projects are building in college towns.” Meanwhile, CNN Money reports Corvallis and Eugene were listed as number 4 and 5 in a list of metro areas in the U.S. where home prices are “starting to turn.” The story cites strong rental sales near UO and OSU and a lowering unemployment rate in Corvallis.
Local marketing and advertising agency bell+funk in the new Broadway Commerce Center downtown has hired Ali Fishner as an account executive. Fishner is a UO journalism grad who previously worked at the R/West ad agency in Portland.
