Environmental volunteer events

With all this talk of the solar eclipse, the beauty of Mother Nature is on a lot of peoples’ minds. Luckily, if you’re in the mood, there are some opportunities this week to give back. Here’s a roundup of environmental volunteer events happening in the area. The Friends of Buford Park & Mount Pisgah group is holding a volunteer work party 8-11 am every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through the summer at Mount Pisgah’s Native Plant Nursery, 34639 Frank Parrish Road. According to their website, you can help with “seasonal propagation and maintenance operations including planting, irrigation, weeding, harvesting …” For more info or to RSVP, contact volunteer@bufordpark.org or 541-344-8350. City of Eugene Parks and Open Space is hosting a “Pull and Paddle,” an event to pull aquatic weeds via canoe or kayak, from 8 am to noon Saturday, Aug. 19, at Delta Ponds (640 Goodpasture Island Road) and 8 am to noon Sunday, Aug. 20, at Golden Gardens (Golden Gardens Street and Jessen Drive). RSVP to Carrie at carrie.l.karl@ci.eugene.or.us or 541-682-4850. Canoes and paddles are provided, but you can also bring your own. The Nature Conservancy is also hosting a volunteer work party at Willow Creek Preserve, 87200 Rathbone Road, from 9 am to noon Saturday, Aug. 19. Volunteers will collect native wildflower seed for future prairie restoration. RSVP at nature.org/oregonworkparties. All of these events are FREE. — Meerah Powell
