Miyazaki in the Park

I have a terrible time with summer movies in the parks. Don’t get me wrong — they’re a wonderful thing, and I think we ought to have more of them. Perhaps it’d be more accurate to say I have a terrible time with actually going to outdoor summer movies. But this year, the city’s scheduled something that I just won’t miss: On Aug. 3, My Neighbor Totoro will screen at Washington Park.

Does the name not ring a bell? How about the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, or the eco-fable Princess Mononoke? My Neighbor Totoro is an earlier film by the same Japanese master of animation, Hayao Miyazaki. Though he’s been called the Walt Disney of Japan, Miyazaki has a much subtler grasp on childhood fears and fancies; his heroes and heroines are often completely ordinary children who experience something amazing and life-changing that has nothing to do with being a princess or marrying a prince.

In Totoro, Satsuki and Mei go with their father to live in the countryside, to be near their gravely ill mother. Everything is new and a little spooky — and maybe magical. It’s not long before the girls meet the totoro, magical woodland creatures with big eyes and toothy grins (sort of like the Cheshire Cat meets a soap bubble, really). The creatures, which come in different sizes and colors, become the girls’ friends and companions in Miyazaki’s gentle, delicate film. Though it hasn’t the excitement of Spirited Away or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Totoro might still be my favorite Miyazaki film; it touches on a timeless feeling of wonder and possibility that understands the relationship fear has with the extraordinary. Beyond that, I don’t want to say too much — I just want to look forward to watching it again. More Than Just Fish
A wealth of info and a variety of exhibits await at Willamette Fish Hatchery

By the time you and your kids have been to every playground in town and fed the ducks for the thousandth time, you’ll be looking for a new diversion. Aside from the gas it takes to get there, all you need to enjoy the Willamette Fish Hatchery in Oakridge is a handful of quarters and plenty of time. The hatchery is open to the public every day, with no admission fee and enough attractions to keep kids — and adults — happy.

Of course, there’s the hatchery itself, where your kids can walk alongside holding pools filled with thousands of spring Chinook and summer and winter steelhead smolts. The small fry fish will be reared until they are four to six inches long, then released into our waterways. Here’s where the quarters come in — your own small fry can get a handful of fish food pellets and cast them into pools with 50-year-old, 8-foot long sturgeon, or rainbow trout fattened over years of the easy life. Though the sturgeons move like submarines in the water, the lively trout will break the surface in a feeding frenzy. Most of the time, the hatchery opens a viewing platform where healthy (and large!) adult salmon can be observed roiling the waters.

You and your charges will be happily surprised to find much more than fish here. There are large cages of game birds, including several beautiful pheasants and a show-off tom turkey. Just around the corner from the birds is a half-mile, easy, flat interpretive trail that loops through the woods. The hatchery museum is open every day and features a large diorama of mounted animal specimens from Oregon’s diverse habitats. Thanks to the wonders of taxidermy, you can marvel at a full-size golden eagle or a black bear. If you really want to make a day of it, bring a lunch and enjoy the tranquil, park-like setting while dining in the covered picnic area.

When you’re tired of walking around, here’s what the kids really like: a nine-hole covered miniature golf course. Equipped with kid-sized putters, colored balls, score cards and pencils, the course is free, so your whole group can play as many times as you’ll let them. Unlike regular mini golf, however, this course depicts the stages of a salmon’s life cycle. Hazards at each hole represent the dangers salmon face on their long journey from the hatchery to the ocean and back to our home waters. You’ll be lucky to scoot your ball past fishermen’s hooks, sea lions, diseases, lack of food or vicious weather. It’s educational, but goofy enough to keep the kids happy for quite a while.

For those of you looking to fill the day with even more activity, there are a couple of family-paced hikes just off Highway 58 on the way to Oakridge, like the trail at Goodman Creek Road. One favorite way to round out the day after an afternoon at the hatchery is a stop off at the Oakridge A&W for ice cold root beer and cheese curds. Like the sign says, they’re curiously delicious! Heck, why wait until you’ve exhausted all your other entertainment options on these long summer days? The Willamette Fish Hatchery could end up being your favorite new anytime destination.

GETTING THERE: Take Willamette Highway 58 to Oakridge. Just through town, at DJ’s End of the Trail Market, turn left on Fish Hatchery Road. The hatchery is about a mile down the road on the right.

Cool Off With Your Brain Off II:
Son of Bad Movies

First, the good news: As of this issue, the three big, behemoth, beast-sized part-threes of the summer are already taking up most of the space in local theaters. No, seriously: Cinemark has 17 screens, Valley River Center’s new theater has 15, and neither one (as of May 25) is showing more than eight films. It’s all Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

There’s no law saying that the last film in a trilogy has to be bad; Return of the King, for one thing, would quickly put that theory to death (and then to death some more … and some more … and then it’d be done). But there’s bad news, too: This summer isn’t finished getting sequelized. We still have Live Free or Die Hard, Ocean’s Thirteen, Rush Hour 3 and — though you won’t hear me complaining about either of these — Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Bourne Ultimatum.

We also have some stand-alone flicks that look downright terrible, or just plain silly. And like last year, I’m here to helpfully point them out to you. But I missed a key selection last year, and I apologize: You, Me and Dupree really was one of the worst films of 2006.

License to Wed Movies with “license to” in the title just seem like a bad idea, and this Robin Williams groaner exemplifies why. I don’t care how many Office cast members you pack into a film; if you have Williams, playing a doofy minister, pretending to bless someone with MC Hammer lyrics, it’s just not funny.

Care Bears: Oopsy Does It! Until I looked up this oh-so-cutely titled movie (Oopsy is a bear!) on imdb.com and Rotten Tomatoes, I had no idea that the Care Bear empire was trucking along with so many releases. But I suspect many of those were straight to video. Right? Not so this one, in which Oopsy Bear must come to the rescue. Y’know, I had a Care Bears sleeping bag. I loved ’em just as much as anybody else. In the ’80s. But if the Ninja Turtles are back, clearly the Bears should get big too.

Bratz Still, it’s not like the younger generations don’t have their beloved, annoying-to-adults franchises. Like Bratz dolls. I do hope Rotten Tomatoes is wrong when it claims this movie is live action; those dolls have enormous heads. Imdb.com lists voice stars, though, so no need to worry that Lacey Chabert and the other voice talent are being subjected to bizarre medical procedures.

Surf’s Up I know penguins are the new Dalmations are the new … whatever else is cute and cuddly. Maybe those damn Coke bears. But every time I have to suffer through this preview, I want to gag. It’s, like, a totally rad “documentary” that’s “based on a true story” about the Penguin World Surfing Championships. Listen, Shia LaBeouf. You were really good in Holes, and I adored you in the underrated Constantine. But this summer you’re in a Michael Bay movie (which, OK, maybe you’re really a big Decepticon fan) and you’re voicing an annoying penguin. Just … be careful, willya?

Hostel: Part II Every time I read an interview with director Eli Roth (who was once a resident adviser in an NYU dorm, which is just creepy), I think the dude is laughing all the way to the bank. He’s just so gleefully over the top that he must have some deep dark secret, like a room wallpapered in fluffy kitten posters, that would ruin his rep as the nastiest purveyor of horror porn out there. Please note: I use the word porn here in the same sense as the phrase “food porn.” There’s not any traditional porn in Hostel. At least, not as far as I know. What, you think I’ve watched that? I’m a sissy. I can’t do scary.

Rise: Blood Hunter Rise what now? Sometimes you just can’t get any better than the imdb.com summaries: “Supernatural thriller in which a female reporter wakes up in a morgue to find herself a member of the undead.” Also, “Lucy Liu bares her boobage in numerous scenes.” Apparently, it’s another new take on vampires. Thanks, but I’ll stick with Day Watch (if/when it comes here). — Molly Templeton

 

Sexy Summer Classes!

It’s summer and it’s hot and people need something to do with their frisky bodies other than join a swingers group and listen to Barry White. The summer session at the UO is no different. Plenty of departments got sex and sexuality on the mind and will attempt to rub the subject from every angle while students squirm in their chairs. Anthropology offers the sex-across-the-millenia Evolution of Human Sexuality as well as an interesting look at tattoing across cultures, Body Art and Anthropology. Philosophy contemplates Love and Sex, discussing how the West’s prudish attidudes towards fucking is holding love hostage, while Russian Studies will pry open the proverbial can o’ worms with Sexuality and Feminism in Russia. Sociology mounts the widespread subject of Sex and Society while Physics gets in on the action with its Astronomy offering of Birth and Death of Stars (hey, even the cosmos needs to get it on). And, not entirely unrelated, Music offers Rock History from 1950 to 1970 so we can finally figure out what music our parents shagged to! Of course, there are the always popular “(fill in the blank with a major world region, culture, sexual orientation) in Film” classes, because, you know, sitting in a dark classroom watching movies makes for sexy thoughts! Unfortunately there will be no Sex in Film class … UO won’t touch that taboo just yet. Maybe next summer. — Chuck Adams

 

 

Pink Martini Is Trying To Break Our Heart

Judging from reviews of their latest album, Hey Eugene!, there will soon be rumors that Pink Martini included the title track (invariably the most cringe-inducing PM track of all time) on their latest disc just so they could name the album after a medium-sized city in Oregon that adores them like no other — and whose ballet company collaborated with them on a multiple ovation performance last year. But the 12-piece Portland band will have nothing to do with Eugene this summer, treating us like an old flame who dumped them abruptly and later snubbed them at a party. Barring a late-minute addition to the Cuthbert or Secret House series, PM will be leaving us high and dry this summer. Oh sure, they’ll still be nearby (playing Corvallis, Bend, Portland and Roseburg). We’ll just have to travel to see them. Still, it hurts when PM continue to remind people that their title track — a jazzy throwback to early 1990s pop-funk — references a man in New York City (a man, we might add, who actually snubbed them … or at least lead singer China Forbes). As for their new album: Yes, it rocks. Yes, it seduces. Yes, the songs are like a secret agent stealing your heart in Japan and then mailing it back to you from Portugal. Yes, you’ll make the hour roadtrip north or south to see them. Because, like Meg Ryan’s character in Sleepless in Seattle, Pink Martini is just waiting for us to meet them halfway. — Chuck Adams

Oregon Bach Festival Eugene’s annual and world-renowned “Summer Festival of Music,” a celebration of all things Bach and more, hopes to take a few risks this year with its “Outside the Bachs” theme. One of its more off-kilter offerings is “PDQ Bach: The Jekyll and Hyde Tour,” in which the bumbling musical progeny PDQ Bach squares off in a showdown with his creator Peter Schickele — a humorous touch to this high and haughty music institution. Also exquisite will be the all-Mendelssohn concert on July 3 featuring violin sensation Midori, making her OBF debut. But perhaps the festival’s biggest number is its opening night, in which conductor Helmuth Rilling leads an emotional rollercoaster with Brahms’ German Requiem. Oregon Festival of American Music The 2007 festival, “The Sweetest Sounds,” pays tribute to Richard Rodgers, one of musical theater’s most lionized producers, winning Pulitzers, Tonys, Oscars, Grammys and Emmys like they were thank-you cards from aunts and uncles. A frequent collaborrator with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein, he wrote the music for many of your favorites, including Oklahoma!, The King and I and A Connecticut Yankee. This year’s festival features two of his most cherished works: Rodgers & Hart’s 1937 comedy Babes in Arms and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s 1949 drama South Pacific, both fully staged.
