Archaeology Film Fest Series: Best of 2010: Screening selections from this year’s Archaeology Film Festival. This weekend includes Chumpi’s Adventure, about three generations of Achuar in the Peruvian Amazon, with Lost Nation: The Ioway, about a pivotal time in Ioway history (8:15 pm Friday, Aug. 6); and Life in Limbo, about life in a small town in Turkey, with Stone Age Artists: The Magdalenian Masters, about art made in France between 18,000 and 10,000 BC (7:30 pm Saturday, Aug. 7). All screenings at DIVA. $6.

Eclipse, The: This ghost story follows a widower (Ciaran Hinds) who encounters unexpected things in his house — and more odd things when he meets a supernatural fiction author (Iben Hjejle, from High Fidelity) and an arrogant popular novelist (Aidan Quinn) at a literary festival. 88 min. R. Bijou. See review this issue.

Ghost Writer: Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams and Kim Cattrall star in the latest from director Roman Polanski, about a ghostwriter hired to complete the memoir of a former British prime minister. “A dark pearl of a movie,” said the L.A. Times. Not rated. David Minor Theater.

Karate Kid, The: Cranky kid Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) has a hard time adjusting to life in China — an impossible crush, a gaggle of bullies — until he befriends the maintenance man (Jackie Chan), who has a not-so-secret talent. PG. Movies 12.

Mirrormask: Neil Gaiman wrote the screenplay for this beautifully strange movie about a young woman, Helena (Stephanie Leonidas), whose mother is very ill. Helena falls into a dreamworld and is tasked with retrieving the title object to revive the White Queen. Directed by comic book artist Dave McKean. 101 min. PG. 9ish pm Friday, Aug. 6, Monroe Park. Free.

Nature of Existence, The: Filmmaker Roger Nygard (Trekkies) visits the sources of the world’s philosophies and talks to “spiritual leaders, scholars, scientists, artists, pizza chefs, and others who have influenced, inspired, or freaked out humanity” in search of the answer to life, the universe and everything. 94 min. Not rated. Bijou.

Other Guys, The: Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are paper-pusher policemen who try to cop the style of their bad-ass, attention-grabbing colleagues (Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson). Things go poorly. With Steve Coogan, Eva Mendes and Michael Keaton. 107 min. PG13. Cinemark. VRC Stadium 15.

Princess and the Frog, The: The latest princess film from Disney sets the classic “Frog Prince” in New Orleans, where hardworking waitress Tiana (Anika Noni Rose) meets a frog (Bruno Campos) who, on his less green days, is a penniless, lazy, music-loving prince. 97 min. G. 9ish pm Saturday, Aug. 7, Bethel Community Park. (12/17)

Sex and the City 2: I can’t even talk about this. Seriously. Movies 12.

Shine: Scott Hicks directs Geoffrey Rush in an Oscar-winning role in the heartbreaking true life story of talented Australian pianist David Helfgott, who had a terribly demanding father (Armin Mueller-Stahl). Lynn Redgrave is his mid-life lover. PG-13. 1 pm Wednesday, Aug. 11, Willamalane Adult Center, Springfield. Free.

Step Up 3D: Street dancers + NYU kid (shorthand for spoiled and well-intentioned, obviously) + OMG DANCING IN 3D = you’re going to pay the 3D upcharge for this? 97 min. PG-13. Cinemark. VRC Stadium 15.

Winter’s Bone: Jennifer Lawrence delivers a striking performance as 17-year-old Ree Dolly, who needs to find her wayward father, and in a hurry. But her two siblings need her, and the rules and ways among her less than law-abiding extended family will make Ree’s search ever more difficult. Harrowing and compassionate, Debra Granik’s new film is a must-see. R. 100 min. Bijou. See review this issue.
