Oregon Shakespeare Festival Ashland’s main event runs throughout most of the year, but the outdoor Elizabethan Stage opens in early June. This year’s Elizabethan Stage lineup includes Henry VII, Don Quixote and the summer-evening staple Much Ado About Nothing — but of course there’s a ton of other stuff going on at the beloved Festival as well. Catch Macbeth in the Angus Bowmer Theatre or the oddly named Dead Man’s Cell Phone in the smaller New Theatre, and don’t forget the Green Show in the festival courtyard each evening. Take a break between plays to wander down to Lithia Park; empty your wallet in the gift shop; make time for a backstage tour or head down in August for one of two special events: the annual Daedalus Project variety show, an HIV/AIDS benefit that includes an auction, fun run and play reading (Aug. 17); or the Chautauqua 150, a day of events that’s part of the Oregon sesquicentennial and includes a talk by Nicholas Kristof and the three-hour Community Chautauqua, community-devised historical, cultural or musical activities (Aug. 12). In short? Fit the OSF into your summer somewhere. All summer, Ashland. www.osfashland.org

July 4th on the Coast Want to get out of town for the 4th of July? Perhaps you should head to the coast, where more small towns than you can shake a stick at will have fireworks displays aplenty. Yachats, Florence, Bandon, Coos Bay: Pretty much any town you pick will have fireworks and, more likely than not, a parade, too. The Nehalem Bay Winery hosts a BBQ following the Manzanita parade; the Coos Bay waterfront offers an entire family fun day complete with face painting, crafts, fishing ponds and more. While many towns have their own websites with event info, www.traveloregon.com is a handy resource for checking holiday listings all over the place. A clambake? An old-fashioned social? The Oregon coast can give you all this and ever so much more. Here are the details on just a few of the day’s events:

Bumbershoot The full lineup won’t be out until sometime in July, but to some of us, that’s irrelevant — Seattle Center’s three-day music festival always blows our minds. Bumbershoot is Sasquatch Music Festival for the masses: It’s way cheaper (tickets are approximately $40 a day and cheaper if you get them early), it has way more stuff to do (poster art shows, theater, comedy shows), and perhaps best of all, it caters to everyone — you could take your boss, your six-year-old and your favorite bartender and they’d all find something to like. This year’s highlights so far (we think; check Bumbershoot’s website for more artists) include Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Say Hi, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Brett Dennen, Matt & Kim, Janelle Monae and The Long Winters. And, undoubtedly, the best shows you’ll see are the ones by bands you’ve never heard of. This is a Northwest experience you cannot miss. Sep 5-7, Seattle Center, Seattle. www.bumbershoot.org or (206) 281-7788. $35 (one day) to $420 (super VIP madness). Standard three-day passes $80 to $120.
