Activist Alert 5-12-2016

• The Eugene screening of Disobedience: the Courage to Break Free, “an inspiring new 40 minute film about the global movement to break free from fossil fuels,” will take place 7 pm Thursday, May 12, at the Eugene Hotel. The event will benefit community radio station KEPW. The evening will also present musician Chico Schwall, the Raging Grannies chorus and speakers from 350Eugene and Our Children’s Trust. The suggested sliding scale donation is $10-$100; no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds for this benefit event will be used to buy broadcasting equipment for KEPW, which is scheduled to go on air by the end of the year. Anyone interested in donating or helping KEPW as a volunteer with fundraising, engineering or programming can call the EPW office at 541-343-8548. Checks can be make out to Eugene PeaceWorks and sent to EPW, 454 Willamette Street.

• On Friday, May 13, hundreds of regional residents will gather in Anacortes, Washington to kick off the Pacific Northwest Break Free from fossil fuels mobilization that will go through the weekend. Organizers say the action is the last of dozens currently taking place around the world, and in the lead-up to the event, hundreds of people have attended nonviolent direct action trainings, kayaktivism trainings, art builds and more. More than 500 people have said they will risk arrest in a mass civil disobedience, and more than 2,000 will attend in support. For more information on the event or carpooling to get there, go to breakfreepnw.org.

• Starting this June recent UO grads Lorin Anderberg and Catherina Savattere will travel from the Pacific Northwest to the East Coast via bicycle in order to document current issues and their solutions. The riders and storytellers say “this trip hinges on sustainability and community empowerment to produce an interactive, multimedia gallery that will foster national conversation around everyday people’s power to affect change.” They are asking for donations of used bike touring/camping gear to aid their physical journey so more time can be spent collecting stories and producing media.
