How to responsibly find edible plants in the wild

For most Eugeneans, “foraging” means a trip to Market of Choice or The Kiva. But the ability to forage for food in the wild, a throwback from our hunter-gatherer days, has a certain appeal and lets food-intrepid adventurers connect their nourishment to the outdoors.  Pat Patterson, currently a volunteer master gardener with Lane County’s Oregon State University Extension, has been foraging since her grandmother tasked her with gathering stinging nettle and other wild greens when she was young. Parvin Butte Gravel Pops Tires On Rural Road

Gravel from the quarry has been linked to at least 11 popped tires

Parvin Butte has been in the public eye ever since developer Greg Demers decided to mine the Dexter landmark for rock products after purchasing it in 2009. This spurred the creation of an online episodic series, and now the story continues as gravel from the quarry has been linked to at least 11 popped tires in a four-day period in April along Creswell’s Ricketts Road.  Continue reading 

Alternative Earth Day Celebrations Pop Up

If you’ve been sulking over the cancellation of Eugene’s traditional Earth Day celebration, then dry those eyes, because now you’ve got options.  A community group cleared the regulatory hurdles and is holding Earth Day in the Park — an Earth Day alternative. The goal of Earth Day in the Park, says event organizer Sabrina Siegel, is to bring Earth Day back to a park and to emphasize the urgency of the issues facing the Earth. Continue reading 

Nobel Peace Prize Winner To Visit Eugene As Part Of PeaceJam Conference

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Rigoberta Menchú’s 1983 memoir, I Rigoberta Menchú, opened the eyes of the world to the atrocities committed against the indigenous Mayan population of Guatemala at the hands of its U.S.-backed right-wing government.  The prolonged civil war ended in 1996, but Menchú’s efforts to spread peace have not, and she is coming to Eugene for the 2015 PeaceJam Northwest Conference, a program that connects Nobel Peace Prize winners with teenagers.
