72-Hour Horror Film Competition
October 17 • 11:00 pm
Do you like scary movies? Even better — have you ever thought about making a scary movie? If the answer is yes, here’s your chance: Every October for the past six years, the Eugene Film Society has hosted a “72-Hour Horror Film Competition,” and it’s open to anyone willing to unleash their inner demons and make use of the abundant technology now readily available to just about everybody (a digital camera and a computer is all it really takes). The concept behind this whiplash competition is simple: Filmmakers receive a prop and a piece of dialogue to kick off the three day event, and then they get busy writing, casting, filming and editing their horror film in the space of three days. It’s a tight squeeze, and it’s a completely exhilarating experience — full of adrenaline, creative intensity and the kind of bonded, cooperative effort that makes the arts soar.
The registration deadline is 11:59 pm Wednesday, Oct. 17 (visit eugenefilmsocity.com); the kick-off event takes place Oct. 18 at Barn Light, and the competition runs through Oct. 21. A screening and awards ceremony (jury and audience awards are given, which include cash prizes) takes place Oct. 28 at Lane Community College’s Ragozzino Performance Hall. — Rick Levin
