Beta Percussion Concert Series Pius Cheung & Eriko Daimo

Area classical music fans have a unique opportunity this summer to see world renowned percussionists perform brand new works for free at Beall Concert Hall.
Between August 4th and 10th, the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance will be hosting the Beta Percussion International Institute an intensive week-long seminar on percussion playing and writing. The new music will be workshopped by day, and performed in the evening by some of the world’s best percussionists.
While the day time events are only open to seminar participants, the evening concerts are free and open to the public.
Hailed by the New York Times as “deeply expressive” for his groundbreaking recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations on solo marimba, Pius Cheung is widely known as a one of the most important percussionists of his generation. He has presented recitals at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, National Concert Hall in Taipei, Kyoto Arts Center (Japan), as well as numerous music festivals around the world.
Cheung will be performing with Eriko Daimo at at 8 p.m., Saturday, August 4. Daimo has been praised for her ‘mesmerizing combination of sound and sight’ (Irish Times). She is an award-winning marimbist, and one of the leading artists of her field. Her recent performances include concerto performances with some of the world’s leading orchestras such as the RTE Ireland National Symphony Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic in Finland, Osaka Symphony Orchestra, Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, Magdeburg Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany, and Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestraamong others; as well as recital tours over 20 countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas.
