Celebrating the 25th year of the Northwest Oboe Seminar!

September 1

The twenty-fifth annual NORTHWEST OBOE SEMINAR, Victoria Racz, Director, is now accepting applications for admittance until July 31.

The Seminar will be held Saturday, September 1, 2018 at First Evangelical Church, Vancouver, WA. Designed for intermediate through advanced oboists, this annual Seminar is devoted to all aspects of oboe performance with a different emphasis each year.

This year we will feature “Life, Music, and Musings” with guest Alex Klein!

Mr. Klein was born in Brazil and began playing with the Camerata Antigua when he was 11. After performing with the finest ensembles in Brazil he went on to study at Oberlin, and then won the first annual Lucarelli International Oboe Competition at Carnegie Hall. He has won many awards since then, including a Grammy for his performance of the Strauss Concerto with the Chicago Symphony. From 1992-’94 he taught at the University of Washington, and in 1995 (when he was 30) he won the principal oboe position with the Chicago Symphony. He resigned in 2004 after developing focal dystonia, but continued to perform internationally as a soloist and conductor. In 2016 he was appointed principal oboist with the Chicago Symphony, and served until 2017. He is currently working on another recording project, and this will be his first appearance at the NOS.

The schedule also includes a solo master class, ensemble playing, dinner, and an evening concert featuring all Seminar participants. Oboe, reed-making and general music supplies will be available for sale courtesy of our Seminar sponsors:  Mark Chudnow Woodwinds, RDG Woodwinds, Inc., and Jones Double Reed Products.

The participant fee for this one-day seminar is $125 and includes T-shirt, minor instrument repairs, dinner, and accompanist. Auditors pay $40 (may be paid at the door) to observe our guest’s focus session and auditors will receive a concert ticket. Applications for participants can be obtained by going on-line to our web site or by calling Seminar Director, Victoria Racz, at (360) 696-4084.
