China and the West before the ‘Silk Routes’: Cultural Contacts, 2000-100 BCE

April 6 • 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

This lecture by Lothar von Falkenhausen, Professor of Chinese Archaeology and Art History at the University of California Los Angeles, will discuss recent archaeologist discoveries in China and beyond on a topic that has long been taboo: the extent to which Chinese civilization was in contact with other parts of Eurasia before the opening of the caravan-trading network known as the “Silk Routes.” Even though this line of research is still very much in flux, this talk will present some of the new evidence and propose tentative ideas on how to interpret it. This event is free and open to the public.
