Dia de los Muertos Exhibit

The Maude Kerns Art Center presents the 25th annual Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead Exhibit, opening on Friday, October 12 with a Fiesta from 6 – 9 pm featuring entertainment by the local art and music collective Taller de Son Jarocha, performing music and dance from Veracruz, and the Ballet Folklorico Alma de Mexico, a group of young dancers performing traditional regional dances of Mexico. The exhibit showcases Day of the Dead artwork by 28 artists from three states and Mexico as well as nine commemorative altars created by individuals and community groups, including Amigos Multicultural Services Center’s Juventud FACETA. Artist Analee Fuentes exhibits a special painting to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Dia de los Muertos Exhibit at the Art Center. Also for the 25th annual exhibit, a large altar is dedicated to folklorist Susan Dearborn Jackson, who curated the initial Dia de los Muertos Exhibit in 1994 and three subsequent exhibits. Eugene artist Samuel Becerra creates a special installation of over 20 ceramic heads of luchadores (Mexican wrestlers) for the 2018 exhibit. A Day of the Dead Gift Shop features handcrafted Day of the Dead items created by Mexican artists. The Art Center presents a Family Fun Day in conjunction with the exhibit on Saturday, October 27, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, with storytelling, dance lessons, musical performances, make-and-take crafts, and other family friendly activities. The exhibit is on view through November 2.
