THE 13th DISORIENT FILM FESTIVAL COMING TO DOWNTOWN EUGENE

The 13th DisOrient Film Festival is coming downtown and to the University of Oregon campus April 19-22.  It is the premiere Asian-American platform to share stories of interest and connect people. The festival encompasses five days of movies across seven venues and 29 filmmakers attending from Hong Kong, Canada and the United States. The Bijou Art Cinemas, Broadway Metro and selected University of Oregon locations will host movies.

The opening night gala will kick-off at 9 pm at the University of Oregon’s Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum.  There will be food, guest filmmakers and entertainment by poet Alex Dang and guitarist Chin Yi Chen. THE JADE PENDANT will be shown.  Directed by Hong Kong veteran Po-Chih Leong and written by L.P. Leong, the story follows the journey of a young girl named Peony who escapes from an arranged marriage and lands up on the foreign shores of America. A tragic love story unfolds, set against the historical lynching of 18 Chinese immigrants in Los Angeles in 1871.

Aloha Friday will be celebrated as part of the festivities in downtown Eugene on Friday April 20 at Whirled Pies, 199 W 8th Ave, Eugene, OR  97401 starting at 6 pm.

A young filmmaker’s panel will take place at Lane Community College at 3:30 P.M.  The discussion will focus on Asian-Americans in Film and Media with OSU Ethnic Studies Professor Patricia Sakurai acting as moderator. Panelists will feature, Yu Gu (WHO IS ARTHUR CHU), Po-Chih Leong (THE JADE PENDANT), Dinh Thai (MONDAY) and Harleen Singh (DRAWN TOGETHER).

The Architecture of Internment exhibit, exploring Oregon’s role in the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WW II, will be on display April 16-23 at U. of O. Straub Hall.  This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Radical Organizing and Activism Resource Center and is open and free to the public.

The featured movie on 5:10 pm Sunday at the UO Redwood Auditorium will have a Hawaiian theme and showcase the Pacific Islander experience with KULEANA directed by Brian Kohne.  One of the producers, Raymond Rolak, will host a Q & A afterwards. It has an award winning soundtrack. https://vimeo.com/214635573

Also shown on 7:35 pm Sunday, April 22, 2018 at the UO Redwood Auditorium will be FIND ME, a narrative that pays homage to our National Parks. The film shows how places can heal, nurture and inspire us for the future.  The Closing Night Ceremonies will take place at University of Oregon EMU Crater Lake Room at 10 pm and feature an afterglow with the special guest filmmakers.
