In conjunction with the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art’s Visual Magic: An Oregon Invitational

January 16 – February 23

Reception: Saturday, January 19, 4pm

Karin Clarke Gallery is pleased to start the new year with a dynamic show of five Oregon painters, who are also featured in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum’s exhibit “Visual Magic Invitational” opening the same week.

Craig Cheshire began his studies at the University of California at Los Angeles but completed them at the University of Oregon (BA, 1958 and MFA, 1961). During those years, encouraged by professor David McCosh, who became his life-long friend and mentor. Painting, says Cheshire, gave him a world of possibility where he could respond visually and with color, light and depth, creating canvases that uncovered something “striking or wonderful in the world around him.”30 years he was an art instructor at Portland State University, where he remains professor emeritus. He continues to paint daily in his Beaverton studio.

Margaret Coe, a longtime resident of Eugene, also received her MFA from the University of Oregon (1978). She studied with David McCosh, Andy Vincent and Frank Okada, and taught art for many years at the U of O, LCC, and the Maude Kerns Art Center. She was recently honored by a 6 month retrospective, along with her late husband, painter Mark Clarke, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, and her work has been collected widely throughout her long career.

Bet Cole earned her undergraduate degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and her Master’s of Fine Arts at the University of Oregon. Bets sells and shows her artwork nationwide. Working primarily in the plein air tradition, painting in the landscape with immediacy and openness, Bets seeks to draw the viewer into her personal experience of and response to nature. She welcomes the challenge of exploring and painting unfamiliar places. Her choice of medium – whether acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, or a combination – is dictated by the subject matter, colors, and quality of light specific to each location.

Humberto Gonzalez was born in Mexico, and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He studied at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL, earning a B.A. in Art and Spanish Literature, and then a M.A. in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Art. He moved to Oregon to teach Spanish and Art from 1971 until his retirement in 1999, at which time he returned to painting full time.
