The Student Production Association of Lane Community College’s current production of Peter and the Starcatcher — a sort of prequel to Peter Panbased on the book by Ridley Pearson and humorist Dave Barry — should not be held to your standard acumen of, ahem, critical snobbery. First of all, it’s a very family friendly affair, in the manner of, say, one of those rambling and loose-limbed kids’ stage productions at Oregon Country Fair. Directed by Tara Wibrew, the show exhibits all the chaotic swarm of a packed playground, and in fact the sets are gymnastic in stature, resembling towering ships and sandy shore. Upon this stage, the large cast swings and sways as we behold a tale of cunning pirates, castaway kids and a momentous shipwreck on exotic shores. It’s a wild and wooly ride, hard to follow at times, but ultimately full of freewheeling charm and infectious high energy. Kids will swoon at the adventurous hustle-bustle of their imperiled kindred, while adults can appreciate the witty nuggets of historical reference and sly commentary that Barry peppers into the salty tale. The whole cast is kinetically all-in, but especially fun to watch is Kai Christensen as the dastardly, bumbling pirate Black Stache, a cross between Cpt. Jack Sparrow and Charlie Chaplain.
Peter and the Starcatcherplays 7:30 pm Thursday through Saturday and 2 pm Sunday, May 3-6, at LCC’s Ragozzino Performance Hall; FREE, suggested donations for college theater scholarships. — Rick Levin
