Robert Schlegel: Varied Themes
May 30 – June 30, 2018
Artist Reception: First Friday, 5:30-7:30 pm June 1st,
Karin Clarke Gallery is pleased to welcome back a gallery favorite, Robert Schlegel. for a large exhibit of his acrylic paintings and mixed media works. He has also self-published a book of his acrylic plein-air sketches, which will be for sale during the exhibit.
The current show revisits his familiar subjects such as houses and birds, and introduces a new series of figurative works. The house images are based on recent visits to Astoria and are heavily influenced by the work of American artists, Wayne Thiebaud and Richard Diebenkorn A second series, the Man in Hat series, is based on the memory of a man Schlegel saw standing up in a boat in the middle of Georgetown Lake, during an electrical storm. These colorful figurative works show the influence of Schlegel’s art heroes, Manuel Neri and Nathan Oliveira.
A graduate of Willamette University and Portland State University, Robert Schlegel’s lifetime commitment to drawing, painting and sculpture has led to numerous solo and group exhibits in California, Montana, Oregon and Washington. His work has been included in the Artists of Oregon juried group show at the Portland Art Museum, the John Natsalous Gallery in Davis California, Steven F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas, KDR-Prographica in Seattle, Koplin Del Rio Gallery in Los Angeles, and the Governor’s Office in Salem, Oregon.
In the fall of 2016, Schlegel was featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Art Beat. Since 2001 he has worked in a studio shared with his brother, in the foothills of the coast range west of Portland.
Please join us for an artist reception starting at 5:30 pm Friday, June 1.
