The Reunion is a group of 4 former Eugenians, all of whom attended North and South Eugene high schools, Churchill High school and the University of Oregon, who have all gone on to have successful careers in music. The group started playing together in the jazz ensemble program at the University of Oregon in the early 80’s.
The concert will be a combination of originals and contemporary jazz and soulful instrumentals.
John Bishop, Drums, is the President of Origin Arts Records, based in Seattle, one of the top jazz record labels in the World. Origin founder John Bishop has been one of the primary voices in Northwest Jazz for 30 years. He has performed with Bobby McFerrin, Lee Konitz, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, George Cables, Sonny Fortune, Bobby Hutcherson, Tom Harrell, Larry Coryell, Jon Faddis, Charles McPherson, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Joe Locke, Hal Galper, Jessica Williams, and countless others.
Kevin Deitz, Bass, is based in Portland and has worked with Mose Allison, Terrence Blanchard, Dave Brubeck, Kurt Elling, Herb Ellis, Dave Frishberg, Benny Golson, Bobby Shew, Janis Siegel, and Diane Shurr. Pop and smooth jazz performances include concerts with the Oregon Symphony, Frankie Avalon, Sheena Easton, Fabian, Robert Goulet, Tom Grant, Marvin Hamlisch, Il Divo, Jeff Kashiwa, The Moody Blues World Orchestra, The Shirelles, Dan Siegal, Toni Tenille, and Mason Williams. Kevin is a veteran of the Portland studio scene, appearing on 20 album/CD projects to date and on numerous recordings for commercial clients like Music Minus One, Roland Musical Instruments, QFC Foods and Nike. Kevin’s critically acclaimed CD of original jazz compositions, “Skylines,” was released on June 16th, 2009 on the Origin Arts label. http://www.origin-records.com/.
Richard Smith, Guitar, lives in Los Angeles where he is a professor of music at USC. His twelve solo recordings have garnished praise such as “Best Contemporary Jazz Guitar Album” (Tune Up Magazine), a nomination for “Record of the Year” (Ad Lib Magazine), and “Best New Artist” (Radio & Records Magazine). His album ‘SOuLIDIFIED’ spent 3 weeks at #1 for satellite and cable airplay (Music Choice). His recent recording, “Tangos” was in the top 10 of the indie and contemporary jazz charts for over 5 months. His release ‘L.A. CHILLHARMONIC’ features Alex Acuna, Brian Bromberg, Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Lorber, Eric Marienthal, Michael Paulo, Greg Adams, and members of the Tower of Power horn section. In 2017 touring and teaching took him to England, Norway, Finland, Holland, Italy, Australia, Greece and France.
Mike Snyder, Drums. Whether it be recording, education, or electronic drums, Mike Snyder has left his mark. His playing can be heard on hundreds of records, Cleo award-winning jingles, film, and television soundtracks, including Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Home Improvement, Dinosaurs, One Tree Hill, and The Little Mermaid. Mel Brooks once called Mike, “My most favorite drummer in the world.” For over 35 years Mike has been a driving force and innovator in the electronic drum world. In addition to being one of the first electronic percussionists in the world, Mike’s designs and patents have greatly influenced electronic drumming. Mike has been the face of Roland’s V-Drums for over 15 years, having given over 1000 workshops and clinics. He is recognized worldwide as an eDrum Guru.
Clay Giberson, Keyboards, has released six recordings on Origin Records, the latest being “Pastures” featuring saxophonist Donny McCaslin, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Matt Wilson. Also he has seven releases with his Portland-based groups Upper Left Trio and Go By Train. His collaboration with saxophonist John Nastos, Duo Chronicles, is a time-based project in which the musicians compose, record and disseminate a video performance every week for one year. Clay also works with jazz, pop, latin and funk artists such as Mel Brown, Stephanie Schneiderman, Scott Pemberton, McKinley and Jessie Marquez.
