Open Sky Shambhala offers this viewing and discussion of “13th” as one of several groups and individuals participating in a community-wide program promoted by Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Springfield-Eugene chapter. “13th” refers to the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery except in the case of individuals convicted of a crime. Find out why the U.S. has 5 % of the world’s population and 25% of the world’s prisoners.
This spring 2018, SURJ will co-sponsor a larger community event, including those who participated in group viewings of “13th,” to address mass incarceration in our community and state.
As part of a course from Berkeley Shambhala about the book, Radical Dharma. we participants watched “13th.” This documentary had a powerful affect on me. It opened my eyes to the injustice and suffering occurring right now in U.S. prisons, with an inordinately high number of men of color incarcerated as a result of our political system.
