Whiskey Wednesday! Grex, Mood Area 52, & Megan Johns
June 20 • 9:00 pm• $5
Grex is an art rock band based out of Oakland, California. In biological terms, a “grex” is an entity composed of several smaller organisms. Grex (the band) explores the meeting point between fun, delightfully strange psychedelic pop/rock and the dark outer reaches of noise and free jazz. Grex has been called “essential current-and-future listening” (Tiny Mix Tapes) and “true genre-warping music” (KFJC), recalling the explosive energy of Jimi Hendrix, the dark power of the Pixies, and the whimsical weirdness of Deerhoof.
Michael Roderick founded Mood Area 52 in 1998 as a Piazzola inspired neo-tango ensemble. Since then the group has incorporated Golden Age Tango material, lounge, electronica, Eastern European influences, Brechtian cabaret tunes, folk, and original compositions about love, loss, genetic mutations, daring women in petticoats, and the ill-hatched crimes of ambitious charlatans.
American experimental folk-rock singer-songwriter, Megan Johns, recorded her first album at 16. Comparisons to Fiona Apple and Neko Case were common, with one reviewer describing the record as, “Alternative folk rock with unlikely flashes of Mazzy Star.” She soon began receiving press and collaborating with artists such as Mountain Goats bassist, Peter Hughes, Zoot Suit Riot engineer Billy Barnett, as well as accomplished string and horn players and emcees.
Her mission is to share and instill love, healing, understanding, positivity, epiphany and the value of creativity via music and art.
